Annual Fund
International House offers a wide array of programs, services, and resources to International House residents and to the greater Chicago community. Much of this is made possible each year by generous alumni and friends who contribute to the Annual Fund Campaign. The Annual Fund supports activities such as:
-
World Beyond the Headlines Series which brings scholars and journalists together to consider major international news stories and how these stories are covered in the media; - Author Night Series which brings a wide variety of authors to the House to discuss their latest books;
- Global Voices Performing Arts Series which showcases individual artists as well as performing arts groups and supports educational programs, art exhibitions and cultural celebrations throughout the year;
- Annual Sunday Supper which celebrates a year of living together and learning from each other and honors all graduating residents;
- Annual Festival of Nations – a joyous celebration of our multi-cultural community;
To support these and other programs, consider making a donation to the Annual Fund!
The Tribute Fund
Another way to commemorate special people or events in your life is through the Tribute Fund - a special part of our Annual Fund. Donations to the Tribute Fund in any amount can mark milestones, such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries or graduations, or honor the memory of dear friends and loved ones. When you make a Tribute gift, an attractive personalized card is sent in your name to the honoree or family, apprising them of your tribute. A letter will also be sent to you as a record of your tax-deductible gift.

The Global Fellowship Initiative
International House Fellowship programs provide crucial funding for the students who comprise the I-House community, assisting them in meeting living expenses and fully enjoying the benefits of International House and the University of Chicago. These fellowships ensure the exceptional geographic, cultural, and economic diversity that is central to the mission of I-house and to that of the University. Fellowships are open to University of Chicago graduate students and College students as well as to graduate students, interns, and scholars from other Chicago-area institutions.
Recently established, the International House Global Fellowship Initiative is one of the most critical of these programs. It provides the funds necessary for International House Fellows, who hail from many countries and often have limited financial resources, to reside in I-House throughout an academic year at minimal or no cost. While in residence, Fellows are expected to contribute their unique perspectives and interests as fully engaged members of the I-House community. In turn, International House provides Fellows with a supportive and diverse residential environment that helps promote their academic success and personal fulfillment.
Support for International House's Global Fellowship Initiative is a valuable investment of your philanthropy in the continuing strength of the University of Chicago’s global engagement and the globally-informed educational experience it offers its students, both American and international.
Giving Levels
Gifts at the following levels provide support for Global Fellowships for students residing at I-House:
- $7,000 in expendable funds provides one student each year with the financial assistance necessary to meet the full expenses of residing at International House for the entire academic year.
- $40,000 endows a fund, in perpetuity, which provides one student each year with the financial assistance necessary to meet the full expenses of residing at International House for one quarter of the academic year.
- $80,000 endows a fund, in perpetuity, which provides one student each year with the financial assistance necessary to meet the full expenses of residing at International House for half the academic year.
- $160,000 endows a fund, in perpetuity, which provides one student each year with the financial assistance necessary to meet the full expenses of residing at International House for the entire academic year.
Endowed funds can be named in honor of an individual, on behalf of a corporate sponsor, or other appropriate funding agency.
The impact of the Global Fellowship Initiative at International House benefits the student who receives this vitally important support, as well as the University more broadly. Their primary benefit is the alleviation of the financial burden on students, who are thereby free to fully experience the intellectual and cultural richness of life at International House. For many students, especially international students, a University of Chicago education is not possible without assistance.
But, the ultimate impact of Global Fellowships reaches beyond their dramatic impact on individuals and their futures. Your support of the Global Fellowship Initiative:
- Helps ensure that tomorrow’s leaders have a globally oriented, culturally sensitive background and outlook
- Fosters global understanding and cooperation by supporting the mission and practice of International House
- Promotes the intellectual standards and values of the University of Chicago
- Fosters the increasing diversity and excellence of the worldwide University of Chicago alumni network
Spotlight on: The Gioh Fang and T.S. Ma Endowed Fellowships
Beginning in 2008–2009, the Gioh Fang and T.S. Ma Endowed Fellowships of $1,500 will be awarded to one male and one female resident from China who are graduate students at the University of Chicago. Dr. Gioh Fang Ma and Dr. T.S. Ma received their doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago in social service administration and chemistry respectively. The Mas’ story began in Shanghai when Gioh Fang Dju, a newly-admitted graduate student at the University of Chicago was waiting for her ship to America. A young man overheard that her destination was Chicago and he asked if she could deliver a note to T.S. Ma at International House. This chance exchange led to friendship, romance and a marriage of over 60 years. By endowing these fellowships, the Mas hope to provide future students from China with the opportunities to have the same life-altering experiences at International House that they had as students here. The Gioh Fang and T.S. Ma Endowed Fellowships will be a permanent reminder of what International House has meant to them.
