Greetings Applicants!
You have taken the first step in becoming part of this diverse and vibrant community. As an incoming resident, you will periodically receive emails with important administrative information as well as things you should know to prepare for your arrival at I-House.
Admissions Process
I am very excited to have received so many Housing Agreements. Please note that the Housing Agreement is the second step in the admissions process. Please ensure you read the document thoroughly. You do not need to remit another $300 housing deposit, because that payment was included with the Application for Residence. The Housing Agreement is also the document where you will rate your room type preference and request early arrival or late departure reservations. Once the Application for Residence and Housing Agreement has been processed, you will receive an Acceptance/ Room Assignment Letter electronically. Please send an email to i-house-housing@uchicago.edu if you have applied and have not received an electronic version of the Housing Agreement.
Housing Guarantee
Upon acceptance of a prospective resident’s signed Housing Agreement, International House guarantees a space for the indicated period of occupancy. Reservations for new residents for an academic year or other period occur upon completion of an Application for Residence, the submission of $300 payment, and acceptance of a Housing Agreement.
Room Assignments
The room assignments process will begin in July. I know how anxious you must be to find out what type of room you have been assigned. Please remember that room assignments are based primarily upon the date of the resident application, receipt of $300 deposit, and receipt of housing agreement. Specific room assignments based solely upon a resident's request are neither guaranteed nor implied. If you do not receive your preferred room type, you may upgrade your at a later date if that room type is available. If you have not submitted a completed Housing Agreement, please do so as soon as possible. Admission to International House is a 2-part process. The Application for Residence and the Housing Agreement are both required to obtain a room assignment. You will not be able to receive a room assignment until you have submitted an application, agreement, and your $300 payment.
Extended Stay Reservation
The fall housing term will officially begin Sunday September 16 at 12:00pm and many of you have already arranged to arrive early. However, if you still need an early arrival reservation, it is not too late. Please contact me at macosta@uchicago.edu as soon as possible. Extended stay reservations may be made for a limited number of days prior to and/ or after the end of a resident’s term. Reservations are subject to availability. Please note that if you arrive early without a confirmed extended stay reservation, your room may not be ready. Please plan to make payment of your early arrival reservation at the time of check-in. The current rate is $30 per night.
Cancellation Deadlines
Cancellations are to be made in writing and postmarked by the following cancellation deadlines: July 1 for contracts beginning Fall Quarter, November 1 for contracts beginning Winter Quarter, and January 1 for contracts beginning Spring Quarter. All cancellations are subject to a $250 cancellation fee. Cancellations received after the cancellation period will not be accepted.
I-House Fellowships
We are still accepting applications for FY2007-08 International House Fellowships. For additional information on this program and to download application materials, please visit the fellowship page on our website.
I look forward to meeting each one of you later this year. Please continue to contact me directly with any questions and concerns. Also, please visit our website at http://ihouse.uchicago.edu for more information about the admissions process as well as to read a sample of our housing agreement.
