I-House E-ssentials #1: July 16, 2008

Greetings Future I-House Resident!
You have taken the first step in becoming part of a diverse and vibrant community. As an incoming resident, you will periodically receive emails with important administrative information as well as things you should know to prepare for your arrival at I-House.

Admissions Process

Many of you have already taken advantage of the online application module and received your acceptance letter. For those who forwarded hard copies of the Application for Residence, please note that the Housing Agreement is the second step in the admissions process. Please ensure you read the document thoroughly. The Housing Agreement is also the document on which you’ll will specify your room type preference and request early arrival or late departure reservations. You do not need to remit another $250 housing deposit, because that payment was included in your $300 application payment. Once the Application for Residence and Housing Agreement have been processed, you will receive an Acceptance/ Room Assignment Letter electronically. A sample copy of the Housing Agreement may also be found on our web site.
Please send an email to:i-house-housing@uchicago.edu if you have applied and have not received an electronic version of the Housing Agreement for any reason. For additional information on our admission process, please visit our web site

Housing Guarantee
Upon acceptance of your signed Housing Agreement, we guarantee you a space for the indicated period of occupancy. Please note that reservations for new residents occur only upon completion of an Application for Residence, the submission of $300 payment, and acceptance of a Housing Agreement.

Room Assignments

The room assignment process has begun. Please remember that room assignments are based primarily upon the date of your application, receipt of $300 deposit, and receipt of housing agreement. Specific room assignments based solely upon a resident's request are neither guaranteed nor implied. If you do not receive your preferred room type, you may upgrade at a later date if that room type becomes available. If you have not submitted a completed Housing Agreement, please do so as soon as possible. You will not be able to receive a room assignment until you have an accepted application, agreement, and have submitted your $300 payment.

Extended Stay Reservation

The fall housing term will officially begin Sunday September 21, 2008 at 12:00pm and many of you have already arranged to arrive early. However, if you still need an early arrival reservation, it is not too late. Please contact me at macosta@uchicago.edu as soon as possible. Extended stay reservations may be made for a limited number of days prior to and/ or after the end of a resident’s term. Reservations are subject to availability. Please plan to make payment of your early arrival reservation at the time of check-in. The current rate is $35 per night.

I-House Fellowships

We are still accepting applications for FY2008-09 International House Fellowships through Friday July 18 2008. The International House Fellowship Program helps to ensure the exceptional geographic, cultural and economic diversity that is central to the mission of the House. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic merit, leadership skills and their unique abilities to contribute to the social and intellectual life of International House. In addition, the Collegiate Fellowship Program supports outstanding advanced undergraduate students from the College of the University of Chicago to live at the House.
