Short-Term Guest Accommodations

In addition to housing residents, International House is pleased to offer guest services, including sleeping rooms, wireless network access, laundry facilities, Tiffin Café, the convenience of proximity to the University, and transportation to downtown Chicago.

Guests must be at least 18 years old and affiliated with either the University of Chicago or another cultural, educational or professional institution. Such guests include University guests, visiting scholars, current and prospective students, faculty, and staff. Guests of such affiliates are also welcome.

Several reservation options are available to guests of International House. Between the hours of 7AM and 11PM, staff at the front desk will be happy to take reservations by phone. You may also use our Online Form. Requests for reservations and inquiries can also be sent by email to i-house-housing@uchicago.edu. Please note that a credit card (Master Card or Visa) is required to confirm any reservation, and that we do not recommend sending this information via email.

Please note:

  • International House guest and resident rooms are not air-conditioned.
  • International House is a 100% smoke free environment. A $250 Room Recovery fee will be charged for smoking in your guestroom. Also, due to the Chicago Clean Indoor Air Ordinance, smoking is banned within 15 feet of any entrance to the building, as well as the entire courtyard.

Dorm Rooms

Dorm Room

Simple, yet comfortable single occupancy resident rooms; these rooms share a common bathroom. Dorm rooms are fully furnished with a desk, chair, and wardrobe. Linens are provided.


Guest Rooms

Guest Room

Modern carpeted rooms with either a queen size or single bed, television and internet access. These rooms share a common bathroom. Campus phone service and linens provided.


Midway Room

MidwayThe Midway Room overlooking the scenic Midway Plaisance is a spacious guest room offering a private bathroom, air conditioning, television with satellite access, refrigerator, microwave, and campus phone service. (Bedroom | Bathroom)

Terrace Room

TerraceThe Terrace Room overlooking the House’s interior courtyard offers a sense of seclusion and tranquility with a private bathroom, air conditioning, television with satellite access, and campus phone service

Guest Apartment

An attractive three room, one bedroom apartment is available for rent on a 9 or 12 month basis or monthly (30 day minimum stay) based on availability. All utilities and campus phone service are included. Guest Services

Wireless Network Access

Short-term guests are now eligible for wireless network access and can sign-up when checking in. Network access is offered for the full duration of your stay and usage is governed by the NSIT EULA. Support is available during business hours from the Technology Coordinator. The cost for network access is $7 per day for less than 7 days, or $5 per day for 7 or more days.

Tiffin Café

Guests are welcome to purchase a variety of snacks and light meals at Tiffin Café, operated by Aramark Catering. It is conveniently located on the first floor of the House across from the dining area, and is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday.

Laundry Facilities

Coin-operated laundry facilities are located in the basement of International House, and are available for use by all residents and guests.

Temporary Storage

For the convenience of guests, residents, and visitors, International House is able to offer temporary storage for luggage. Storage is not offered overnight, and is limited. Requests for luggage storage can be made at the front desk between 7am and 11pm and will be accepted on a first come- first serve basis as availability permits. Alternative luggage storage space does not exist within the House, however if sufficient vacancy exists, guests may choose to retain their room at current rates.

Items that are prohibited by International House may not be held under this policy. These items include any and all dangerous or hazardous items and materials and are listed in detail in the resident handbook:

This policy permits the storage of luggage only. Other items will not be stored. Final determination of whether an item is considered to be luggage will be made by International House personnel.

Guests may be asked to assist with the lifting or moving of their bag if the weight of the luggage exceeds that which can be lifted by International House personnel.

Fees

  • $2 per piece of luggage
  • $5 per day fee for failure to claim bag

Guest Policies & Procedures

Guests are expected to behave in a manner consistent with the mission of International House. This includes a demonstration of respect for fellow occupants, staff, and property (physical and intellectual). Accepted Forms of Payment

All guests are required to pay for their entire stay upon check-in. Payment may be made by Visa, Master Card, traveler's checks or cash. Personal checks are not accepted. University of Chicago departments may pay with an Interdepartmental Order

Cancellations and Refunds

A 24-hour notice is required in order to prevent a penalty fee charge to your credit card. Refunds will be issued to the payment credit card or by check. Cash refunds cannot be issued.

Keys

All guests are responsible for security and room keys issued to them at the time of check-in. Any lost keys should be reported to the front desk staff immediately. A $100 fee will be assessed for keys which are lost or not returned at time of check-out.

Check-In & Check-Out

Check-in begins at 3PM daily. Guests planning to arrive after 11PM are urged to make prior arrangements with front desk staff in order to ensure check-in materials are available after hours. Check-out time is 12PM daily. We are not able to offer extended check-out times. Guests who do not check out by 12 noon on their scheduled day of departure are subject to a late checkout fee of $30. In addition, a full night's room charge will apply for any guest checking out after 4PM.
