Spring Quarter 2021

Global Hangouts

Join and be a part of the Global Hangouts - a three part series presented by UChicagoGRAD, the Office of International Affairs, and International House. These monthly sessions aim to mitigate the isolating effects of lockdown by providing international graduate students with a space to come together, chat, share ideas, and connect with other folks from different countries.

Next Program: Thursday, May 27
8AM-9AM & 5PM-6PM
Art & Photography Reflection

This month we’ll chat about art and photography reflecting the times. Whether you’ve been stuck inside your home lately or out exploring the warmer weather, what images capture how you are feeling? Whether it’s an image you’ve encountered on the internet or a photo you snapped yourself, we will have a chance to share photos and discuss, as well as catch up in an informal setting.

International Cooking Club

The International Cooking Club will take place biweekly throughout Spring Quarter. Each individual session will see a demonstration for a vegetarian recipe led by one of our Graduate Fellows. International House will cover the cost of ingredients for those who register in advance, however, students will need to be able to collect their groceries from a local Hyde Park store. Participants may choose to cook along or simply enjoy the demonstration and recreate the meal in their own time. Additional unregistered participants may also join the meeting!

Open Mic Series

The show must go on! Our Open Mic Series has returned virtually and new dates for Spring Quarter will be added soon. Graduate students are invited to perform any kind of talent, or to simply watch and enjoy via Zoom to support creative minds.

The Listening Room

Listen together and discover new music at our monthly music listening session. If you have a love for music then tune in to share it with other graduate students and experience a variety of genres from all over the world to discuss together.

Grad Mixers & Cultural Celebrations

The Graduate Commons Program regularly hosts student mixers, often connected to special cultural events. Recently, graduate students have come together to celebrate Lunar New Year, Nowruz, Mardi Gras, and Diwali.

Reimaginations Discussion Group

Reimaginations is a discussion group in which student thinkers from different countries and disciplines come together in order to "reimagine" crucial concepts of the human experience. Since its conception in 2017, graduate students have met at Reimaginations and discussed some of the most pressing social challenges in the world. Reimaginations will continue biweekly on Wednesday evenings throughout Spring Quarter.

Show Me Chicago Trips

International House GRAD Global Impact Interns organize regular trips to must-see places around Hyde Park and the rest of the city of Chicago. Past trips have included White Sox baseball game; Chicago Fire soccer game; Robie House tours; various museums; rooftop brunches; holiday attractions, such as Lincoln Park zoo lights and Chriskindlmarket; as well the many wonderfully diverse Chicago neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Greektown, and Pilsen. These are a great way to explore the many exciting activities that this city has to offer in a group. Until the day that we can return to exploring the many exciting activities that this beautiful city has to offer together in groups, we would like to continue to provide a platform to share the best must-see locations and hidden gems. Do you have a favorite spot that you have discovered, either in Hyde Park, or somewhere further across Chicago? Submit your chosen place (pictures and videos are a bonus!) and if we feature it on our social media, then we'll guarantee to arrange a trip for you and a group of other graduate students once it is safe to do so.

Watch Parties

International House often hosts watch parties for various sporting and music events. Annual events include the Superbowl, Oscars, Eurovision Song Contest, and FIFA Champions League matches.

All events are exclusively for graduate students.
