Join us for Japan Twang! The Third, an electrifying performance featuring renowned musician Sato Michiyoshi, one of today’s leading performers of Tsugaru-jamisen – a modern, improvisatory, and technically demanding Japanese musical tradition. Using the three-stringed shamisen, Sato blends speed, precision, and creativity to push the instrument into new musical territory.
The program will include traditional folk pieces, solo improvisation, modern compositions with vocals, and interactive audience participation. Attendees will also enjoy brief commentary on the music and may even have a chance to try the instrument themselves after the performance. Translation and commentary will be provided by Joshua Lee Solomon of Hirosaki University, Japan.
This event is co-sponsored by International House and the Center for East Asian Studies, with generous support from the Japan Foundation, New York.
