Join International House and the Center for East Asian Studies as we host Prasenjit Duara, Oscar L. Tang Family Distinguished Professor of East Asian Studies at Duke University. Secularisms in different societies have been shaped by complex crossings of older, looser collection of ideas and practices of ‘religion’ and the modern Protestantized conception of religion. Professor Duara develops a comparative frame of reference to discuss the nature of religious accommodation historically in China, India and Japan and Europe particularly with the confessional revolutions of the 16-17th centuries. He argues that the confessional revolutions played a significant role in the emergence of the self/other (saved/damned) binary of nationalism.

Join International House and the Center for East Asian Studies as we welcome Mary Brinton for the 14th Annual Tetsuo Najita Distinguished Lecture. Over the past three decades, the Japanese government has enacted a series of measures to boost the country’s anemic birth rate. Nevertheless, the birth rate has hovered around 1.4 children per woman, far below what is required for the population to reproduce itself. Why haven’t the policies worked? Hear Professor Brinton argue that policies focused on trying to make women’s work lives more like men’s have fundamentally missed the mark. Not only have such policies failed to raise the birth rate, they have also arguably exacerbated gender inequality. Professor Brinton suggests that future government and workplace policies move in a different direction.

Shomyo no Kai: Voices of a Thousand Years

Described as meditative and sublime, the Buddhist form of ritual chant known as shomyo is one of the oldest living forms of vocal music. Shomyo no Kai, a chorus of two dozen priests from the Shingon and Tendai sects of Japanese Buddhism, perform both ancient shomyo and contemporary shomyo-inspired works, accompanied by colorful ornamental robes, processions, and the scattering of flower petals.

Asado (Spanish: [aˈsaðo]) is the technique and the social event of having or attending a barbecue in various South American countries, especially Argentina and Uruguay where it is also a traditional event. An asado usually consists of beef, pork, chicken, chorizo, and morcilla which are cooked on a grill called a parrilla, or an open fire. The meat is prepared by a person who is the assigned asador or parrillero. Our asador for Alumni Weekend is Norberto Zas, owner of Piccolo Mondo restaurant in Hyde Park. Join International House as we sample and learn about the delicious meats and wine.
