Stary Olsa is a music group from Minsk, Belarus, which performs medieval, Renaissance, and early baroque music from Eastern Europe. They are interested in music from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, particularly the 16th-century Astramiečava Manuscript, in addition to melodies popular across feudal Europe.
Speed Bumps, Traffic Calming, and Rebuilding the Built Environment

In this public talk, Paul Josephson will explore the history of traffic, the multitudinous failures to deal with it including repeated, ineffective measures to facilitate traffic rather than struggle with it. Using the speed bump as a case study of one among many ways to calm traffic, Josephson will examine how cities have attempted to come to grips with motorized traffic.

140 characters, tight budgets, and a “fake news” branding defines political journalism in 2017. Twitter has accelerated the news cycle and created a demand for real-time responses. The cost of business has forced media outlets to consolidate resources in large cities – often at the expense of on-the-ground reporting from state capitals. Meanwhile, a nationwide trend toward distrust of media outlets, sometimes expressed in outright hostility toward reporters, has further complicated the relationship between the press and the public. Join us for this year's Tetsuo Najita Distinguished Lecture entitled America in Japan/ Japan in America: Towards a Topographical Analysis of Japanese Intellectual History from KOTOKU Shusui (1871-1911) to ETO Jun (1932-1999). Since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, the search for a new style of narrative of Japanese intellectual history that focuses less on chronological development and more on spatial differences has gained significance. Professor Umemori calls this new style of narrative “topographical analysis of Japanese intellectual history.” His lecture will focus on several Japanese intellectuals who stayed in the United States and how their experiences affected their formation of ideas.

Kirschner Human Rights Memorial Lecture. Anderson is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of African American Studies at Emory University and a 2018-19 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow in Constitutional Studies. Her research and teaching focus on public policy, particularly the ways that domestic and international policies intersect through the issues of race, justice, and equality in the United States. Make Music Chicago returns to International House for a day of free performances. Musicians, amateur and professional alike, join in celebrating Hyde Park’s own iteration of this fantastic global event. Over 700 cities around the world come together on the longest day of the year to celebrate music and music making. Taking its cue from the Fête de la Musique, a national musical holiday in France, Make Music Chicago has been bringing together musicians of all ages and skill levels, neighborhoods and specialties. From Hyde Park to Humboldt Park, venues all over the city provide performances that are free for musicians and audience members alike.
