Najita Film Screening & Lecture: Tell the Prime Minister with Oguma Eiji

The 11th Tetsuo Najita Distinguished Lecture in Japanese Studies presents a two-day program that encompasses a film screening of Professor and Director Eiji Oguma’s “Tell the Prime Minister” on September 27th and a keynote lecture featuring Professor Oguma (Japanese with English translation) on September 28th. Professor Oguma is a Professor of the Faculty of Policy Management at Keio University in Tokyo. His research covers national identity and nationalism, colonial policy, and democratic philosophy and social movements in modern Japan from the perspective of historical sociology.

Etno Grupa “Trag” Concert

The 10-person vocal-instrumental ensemble from Banja Luka, Serbia will perform Serbian folk music, following an introductory performance from Chicago’s Dukati and Biseri Folklore Ensemble.

The series aims to provide a venue to hear from leading diplomats, engage them in open dialogue, and come to a better understanding of the issues, challenges, and opportunities facing countries around the world. Programs for the series are held throughout the academic year.

Voices from Hiroshima: Atomic Bomb Survivor Testimony and Atomic Bomb Memoirs Reading

The Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago will be hosting “Voices from Hiroshima” – a program that features testimony from a “hibakusha” or atomic bomb survivor from the city of Hiroshima.  In addition to the survivor’s testimony, two poets will be reciting poems relating to the atomic bomb both in English and in Japanese. This program will also provide University of Chicago students an opportunity to learn share and exchange ideas regarding the atomic bombings as well as participate in the poetry reading. The program will end with a reception that will provide an opportunity for attendees and participants to meet one another for further discussion.

Arctic Defenders tells the remarkable story that began in 1968 with an Inuit activist movement in Canada. It led to the largest land claim in western civilization, orchestrated by young visionary Inuit with a dream - the governance of their territory - the creation of Nunavut. The film reveals the history of Canada’s attempt at sovereignty in the north and finds hope and inspiration from determined Inuit who changed the rules of the game.

Porter served as Pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church in Chicago’s Englewood Community (1962-1971; 1979-1995). He founded Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s first SCLC Chapter in Chicago in 1964. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the Union Institute and University in 1975, He published his first book The Dating Habits of Young Black Americans in 1979. His 500-plus page book, Autobiography of Black Male Violence is considered by many to be a classic legacy work; he is listed in historymakers.com and “Who’s Who in Black America.” Porter is a prolific motivational speaker and writer, and has over forty years of experience working with the Freedom Movements, urban gangs, and violence projects.

2017 Kirschner Human Rights Memorial Lecture with the ACLU’s David Cole

Join the International House Global Voices Program, the Pozen Family Center for Human, and the Institute of Politics in welcoming the National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) David Cole for the annual Robert H. Kirschner Human Rights Memorial Lecture series. avid Cole is the National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union. As a professor at Georgetown University and attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights and the ACLU, he has litigated issues involving the use of secret evidence, the protection of flag-burning as political speech, supporting the free speech rights of immigrants, and against the suppression of peace advocacy criminalized as “material support for terrorism.”

Dukati & Biseri Annual Concert

Founded in November of 2009 with a handful of devoted and passionate dancers and musicians, Dukati and Biseri Folklore Ensemble has grown into a performing ensemble representing Serbian and Macedonian folklore through the performing arts. The ensemble spans from adolescents to adults who are brought together for the same passion and love of traditional music and dance. Join International House in welcoming the Dukati and Biseri Folklore Ensemble for an annual concert on June 3, 2017.
