GRAD Book Club – “The Yellow House” by Sarah M. Broom

Join the Graduate Commons Program as we kick-off our GRAD Book Club. This quarter, we will read four books on the theme "city." For our first meeting, we will be transported to New Orleans as we read The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom. A book of great ambition, The Yellow House tells a hundred years of her family and their relationship to home in a neglected area of one of America’s most mythologized cities.

In celebration of Latinx Heritage Month, we will gather to read "I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala," the autobiography of Rigoberta Menchú. A Nobel Peace Prize winner reflects on poverty, injustice, and the struggles of Mayan communities in Guatemala.

Continuing with our theme of "city," we will be transported to Berlin as we read "Russian Disco" by Wladimir Kaminer. Born in Moscow, Wladimir Kaminer emigrated to Berlin in the early 90s when he was twenty-two. "Russian Disco" is a series of short and comic autobiographical vignettes about life in the explosive multi-cultural atmosphere of 90s Berlin.

For our first meeting of the quarter, we will gather to read "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel. This classic love story takes place on the De la Garza ranch, as the tyrannical owner, Mama Elena, chops onions at the kitchen table in her final days of pregnancy. Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico blends poignant romance, bittersweet wit, and delicious recipes.

Join International House for our bi-weekly Book Club. This quarter, we will read books on the theme "food." At this meeting, we will gather to read "The Edible Woman" by Margaret Atwood. Marian McAlpin is an “abnormally normal” young woman, according to her friends. But after her dependable boyfriend Peter proposes marriage, things take a strange turn. Suddenly empathizing with the steak in a restaurant, Marian finds she is unable to eat meat. As the days go by, her feeling of solidarity extends to other categories of food, until there is almost nothing left that she can bring herself to consume.
