Global Voices Program and UChicago Presents: Barokksolistene – An Alehouse Session.

Taverns or alehouses have, since the Middle Ages, been a second home to the English. In the late 17th century, when theaters were closed down due to religious reasons, many of these alehouses were turned into so-called Musick-Houses, where musicians gathered to play intimate concerts for an enthusiastic (and beer-thirsty) audience. Henry Purcell and other known composers could be found here, presenting their new works or engaging in lively musical duels with local musicians. Enjoy this evening of seducing, touching, folky, and serious music, accompanied by anecdotes and humor – and perhaps a tankard of something!

Event is open to the public. $38 for General Admission; $30 for faculty and staff; $20 for under 35 years old; $10 for students. Click here for ticket information.

Co-sponsored by the Global Voices Performing Arts Series and UChicago Presents.
