Hear Hedy Weinberg, the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Tennessee, as she delivers this year’s Social Justice Address titled Bending the Bars: Mass Incarceration, Racial Disparities, and Criminal Justice Reform in 21st Century America.

Hedy Weinberg joined the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Tennessee as their Executive Director in 1984. Weinberg is particularly proud of ACLU-TN’s advocacy in post 9-11 America, including campaigns to combat racial and ethnic profiling, to protect and promote religious freedom and privacy rights and to ensure fair treatment of immigrants. She now oversees a substantial expansion of the organizations’ staff, program and resources. Weinberg is a founding member and steering committee member of “Nashville For All of Us” which successfully organized the campaign to defeat the “English-Only” ballot initiative in Nashville. She serves on the Advisory Board of Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition and also served on the ”Unmet Legal Needs: Alternative Strategies Advisory Committee” to the Access to Justice Commission of Tennessee Supreme Court and she is a 2011 alumni of Leadership Nashville. Weinberg grew up on Chicago’s South Side. She is a graduate of Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa where she majored in history and psychology. She received her graduate degree from the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. Weinberg has been recognized for her advocacy work and is the recipient of the Human Relations Award from the National Conference on Community and Justice – Nashville Chapter; the Tennessee Library Association’s Freedom of Information Award; and the Human Rights Campaign Equality Award. Last October, Weinberg was inducted into the Academy for Women of Achievement by the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

This event is open to the public; suggested registration here. $10 for 1 CEU. Free without the CEU.
