Haunting melodies and vivacious rhythms drawn from Czech folk music make Dvořák’s Piano Quintet one of the most beloved of chamber works. The Chicago Ensemble, now in its 38th season, offers this quintet as the featured piece on its second program of the season.

In the first half of the program, The Chicago Ensemble presents a characteristically varied and unusual selection of pieces. A concerto for oboe and strings, in E Minor, by the Baroque master Telemann opens the program. Following the Telemann piece is Henri Dutilleux’s Sonata for oboe and piano, written in 1947, early in the prominent French composer’s career. It displays the grace and refinement we associate with 20th century French music. Concluding the first half is a work by Gilad Cohen, a young Israeli composer, active in popular as well as classical music. He has been cited for music that is “fascinating, vibrant and drawing the ear as well as the heart.” Mr. Cohen’s Variations for oboe, strings and piano is a winning work in The Chicago Ensemble’s recent “Discover America” competition for new chamber works.

Performers are oboist Ricardo Castañeda, violinists Mathias Tacke and Rika Seko, violist Rose Armbrust Griffin, cellist Rebecca Zimmerman and pianist Gerald Rizzer, who is the group’s artistic director.

Open to the public. Tickets are normally $25 for single admission, but two admissions will be offered for the price of one at this rescheduled concert. Admission will be $10 for students, and free for I-House residents. Arrive early to enjoy a reception with the musicians at 7:00PM.
