Chess metaphors are used, at times ad nauseam, to describe international relations—attack, end game, counterattack, stalemate, and of course, checkmate. In recent years, these terms have most frequently been used when describing Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin has been described as a chess master with the tactics he has used in region over the past 2 years. But chess legend and human rights activist, Garry Kasparov, says Putin is not a master chess player because he doesn’t play by the rules. In his new book, Winter is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped, Kasparov argues that the worlds’ democracies must take an economic and diplomatic stand against Putin’s Russia to stop his global threat.
