Bossa nova, a jazz-influenced, quiet version of Brazilian samba, has won the world over since the 1960s. International House resident and one of the few professional Brazilian guitarists in Korea, Doyoung Lim explores the international renditions of this popular music, bringing Bossa Nova songs from Korea, United States, France, Italy, Argentina, and of course, Brazil.

Doyoung first took up the guitar when he was a junior in high school. He started out playing classical guitar, but it was in Hyde Park that he really got into playing the music he now plays. During his first year, he went to a small party in 55th and Lake Park where he saw Brazilian musicians up close for the first time: Bossa Tres (and later Paulinho Garcia at International House).  He went to Bossa Tres’s shows every chance he had, and they became like his second family here in Chicago. After Doyoung’s first year, he returned to Korea for summer break, and played with some of the best musicians in Korea, who were eager to try out Brazilian music. There was very little to information on Brazilian music in Korea, so Doyoung has successfully started running a website to translate and introduce Brazilian music and culture to Korean audiences. This year, Doyoung has planned an “international” concert to pay tribute to the wonderful multicultural atmosphere we have here at International House, and celebrate the many versions of bossa nova.
