More than thirty years after Deng Xiaoping’s first social and economic reforms, China is again in a state of transition as leaders struggle to build and maintain international relationships, revitalize banks and state-owned enterprises, and cope with growing social pressure from citizens anxious for political reform.

In view of these trends, The University of Chicago’s China and the World conference will focus on major themes in economics, foreign policy, and Chinese society, and we hope to explore the consequences of China’s changing position within the international system and gain a better understanding of some of the headwinds currently facing China from an economic and diplomatic perspective.  The conference will comprise three panels on (i) financial and economic transformation in China, (ii) international relations in the age of an Asian superpower, and (iii) social change and Chinese politics.

An audience Q&A session with the speakers will follow the discussion. Dinner provided.
