“Typhoon Haiyan, One Year Later: Remembrance and Reconstruction” is a tribute to the generosity of the Chicago community and the resilience of the Filipino people. It commemorates the one-year anniversary of the typhoon by exhibiting original artwork of several Chicago-based Filipino artists (one of which is “Hearts for Haiyan,” a collage of notes written by Chicago residents for typhoon victims). An original musical composition dedicated to typhoon victims called “We Are Here For You” will be performed by local singers. A poetry anthology with contributions from Filipinos both in the U.S. and the Philippines, “Verses: Typhoon Haiyan,” will be launched during the event, with selected poems to be read by community representatives. A dance inspired by the typhoon and recovery efforts will be performed by Chicago-based choreographer Eddy Ocampo, co-artistic director of LevelDANCE. Photographs of disaster-struck areas taken during and after the typhoon up to the present day will also be on display. The latter part of the event will consist of experts (such as Prof. Mark Lycett, Director of the Program on Global Environment and the Center for International Studies, University of Chicago) and groups involved in reconstruction, including UNICEF (who will present a one-year report) and a medical mission team. A booklet containing a photo essay of the typhoon and reconstruction efforts will be printed for distribution during the event.
