Past & Future Commons

Join the Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization (CEGU) and International House for the Second Annual CEGU Conference. This two-day event will explore the twin emergencies of climate change and biodiversity loss which have led to a revived interest in the past and future of “the commons”—in land that exits prior to or beyond private property, where social relations and natural resources are governed without the regulation of the state. In pointing beyond the traditional institutions of the state and the market, the commons offer ways of rethinking the societal, spatial, and ethical dimensions of climate change, reorienting our understanding of the relationship between urban and rural, local and planetary, the global north and the global south, the human and the non-human.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Please enter through door on South Dorchester Avenue.

People with disabilities who may need assistance should contact International House in advance of the program at (773) 753-2274 or i-house-programs@uchicago.edu
