The Art of the Possible: The Role of the Arts in Policy Making

International House joined the Consulate General of Ireland in Chicago for an evening of conversation, music, poetry, and refreshments. Taken place on St. Brigid’s Day, the event brought together highly accomplished women from both the arts and the policymaking spheres for a series of performances and a discussion about the intersection between art and policy. Guests included Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, renowned Irish poet Julie Morrissy, and the University of Chicago based poet and professor Rachel Galvin.

International House and the Center for East Asian Studies came together to host a special viewing of a CHINA Town Hall live webcast featuring U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Kurt Campbell. The viewing was followed by an in-person discussion with Michael Millis, Professor of Surgery and Faculty Director, UChicago Center in Beijing; and Ken Pomeranz, University Professor of Modern Chinese History and Faculty Director, UChicago Hong Kong Campus. The conversation was led by Michael Kulma, Assistant Director of Programs and Communications at I-House.

U.S. Commitment to Human Rights and Democracy in East Asia/DPRK

International House, alongside the Center for East Asian Studies, the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights, and the Asian Policy Forum, welcomed Ambassador Julie Turner, Special Envoy on North Korean Human Rights Issues at the U.S. Department of State. Ambassador Turner joined in conversation with Karl Friedhoff, Marshall M. Bouton Fellow for Asia Studies at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

Vivekananda Lecture: Thinking Through Space: A Multilingual Approach to Literary History

International House joined the Committee on Southern Asian Studies for the Vivekananda Lecture by Francesca Orsini, Professor Emerita SOAS & Vivekananda Visiting Professor, Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago. The talk employed space heuristically and at different levels to rethink literary history from a multilingual perspective.
