Latinx Heritage Month Opening Celebration

Join International House Global Voices Program and Latinx Heritage Month Committee for a fun night celebrating Latinx heritage. Intended to kick-start a month-long series of events celebrating Latinx heritage, this opening program will include a live band and DJ from Chicago's premier Latin Dance Party, ¡Pachanga!, food from various Latin American countries, and local Latinx vendors.

Irving Artists

Join International House and Irving Artists (cellist Alexa Muhly, pianist Hiroko Nagahata) for their special album release concert, featuring works by Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Bach, Cassado, and Dvorak. $20 General Admission, free for students with UCID. The concert will be preceded by a complimentary reception at 6:30PM.

UChicago Presents: Wu Man Luncheon & Screening

As part of UChicago Presents: Music Without Borders Series, Wu Man, a renowned pipa (Chinese lute) musician, will engage in a luncheon, discussing her musical career and impressive repertoire. This intimate, yet casual lunch conversation will be moderated by David Wilson (UChicago Ethnomusicologist) and supplemented with time for the audience to ask questions. Later on in the evening, there will be a film screening of her documentary "Discovering a Musical Heartland: Wu Man's Return to China." 

The Newberry Consort: The Empress: Margarita Teresa

During the 2019-2020 season, International House Global Voices Performing Arts Series is pleased to host three performances by Chicago’s premier early music ensemble The Newberry Consort. The first of these performances will feature operatic excerpts and instrumental music composed in honor of Empress Margarita Teresa of Spain. 

Zohn Collective: PORTALS

The program  will feature two works, the scenic cantata Comala by Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, which will be presented in collaboration with La Coperacha Puppet Company, and Daniel Pesca’s Nocturnes, a world premiere written specially for Zohn Collective with poetry by Irving Feldman. Guests are invited to a discussion with the composer before the concert at 3:00PM, as well as a reception that will follow directly after the performance.

Plena Libre, UChicago's newest Don Michael Randel Ensemble-in-Residence, will accompany a Puerto Rican dance workshop. Ivelisse Diaz, co-founder of La Escuelita Bombera De Corazon and the lead vocalist of Bomba con Buya in Chicago, will lead the instructional workshop for dancers of all backgrounds and skill levels.

My Story of Transformation and Hope," which was recently named a finalist for the National Book Award.

Muslim Students Association Annual Banquet: Sacred Struggle

International House is happy to host the Muslim Students Association annual banquet again this year. This event will serve as a time of communal gathering - to enjoy the blessings of food and company - as well as to raise funds for a noble cause. This year, all proceeds will benefit Believers Bail Out, an organization that releases incarcerated believers by covering their bonds, with the overall goal of ending mass incarceration. The theme this year is 'Sacred Struggles,' and the program will feature speakers Ustadh Ubaydallah Evans and Maryam Kashani.

The Newberry Consort Presents The Marchesa: Isabella d’Este

Please join the Global Voices Performing Arts Series in welcoming back early music ensemble The Newberry Consort for their first performance of 2020! This program, a co-production with acclaimed Philadelphia-based wind band Piffaro, honors the great Isabella d'Este, a patron of the Italian Renaissance, and the concert features the frottole, an Italian song form that propagated at her Mantuan court in the late 15th-century.

Balkan Rhythms & Dance

Join International House for a day of learning and dancing to Balkan music! This event will begin with a lecture led by John Kuo, the leader of the Chicago-based ensemble Balkan Dances, on Balkan music and dance rhythms. Following the lecture, Balkan Dance ensemble will teach guests the steps of the most popular Balkan dances, and then perform to show an intricate real-life demonstration in folk dress attire. The event will end with an exhibition of hand-made instruments and nineteenth century folk costumes. 

South Asian Music Ensemble

The ensemble focuses on both vocal techniqe and instrumentalism, exploring various stylistic features, compsitional forms, improvisational practices and performance conventions specific to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and other South Asian diasporas.
